From the HOD's Desk:
Department of Chemical Engineering is one of the old Departments in DSCE, started in year 1982 with 30 intake, increased to 60 in 2007. Also M.Tech was started in the same year.
Department is accredited twice by NBA, once for 5 years. Department is recognized research center under VTU to pursue M.Sc. (Engg by Res) and PhD. It has well established laboratories.
Department has well qualified both, experienced and young faculty who have graduated from reputed institutions like NITK. The faculty as well as students take pride themselves in continually evolving in to well-rounded personalities.

DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
Invited Talk
The Department regularly organizes Expert Lectures, inviting experienced and prominent experts to enrich the knowledge of our students on recent developments in industrial technology and research. Webinars are also a regular part of the department activities helping students to connect with professionals overseas as well as alumni pursuing higher education in reputed universities overseas.
Facilities
- The class rooms are equipped with overhead projectors.
- The laboratories are equipped with the state of the art equipment.
- The department also houses a library with over 1000 books and copies on various courses, soft copies of various journals and project thesis being added regularly.
- A dedicated research laboratory with advanced equipment’s like Gas Chromatography, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry.
Research
- Three of the faculty members are Doctorates from National Institute of Technology, Karnataka and Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Anantapur, while nine faculty members are pursuing PhD in core areas of research on waste management, Bio fuels, Nano Technology in photovoltaics and photo catalysis and fuels from plastics.
- The department has ongoing projects funded by Vision Group of Science and Technology – VGST, Karnataka State Council of Science and Technology - KSCST and have successfully completed project on UKIERI-PTS on Health and Safety funded by British Council and MODROBS, funded by AICTE, DRDO, Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers – IIChE.
- To inculcate research interest, students right from their second year of the programme are also involved in research activities of the department.
Department News
- The department organizes national level Technical symposium – CHEMOVATION, a platform that brings students from various states to showcase their projects and expert lectures by professionals from industries and researchers.
- The department has constituted an association called Chemical Engineering Association – ChEA, headed by a senior faculty and run by student representatives, aimed to actively promote all round development of students. ChEA provides a platform for students to plan, organize and host many technical and non-technical events.
- Chemical Day, is one such event which students look eagerly to organize activities like technical paper and poster presentations, quiz, modeling, cultural and sports etc. and also actively participate to show case their talents.
Department Highlights
- Students have constantly bagged top ranks in VTU and have also won BEST STUDENT awards at state level.
- Scholarships are awarded to deserving students to aid their academics.
- The department has projects funded by various National and State funding agencies
- Students participate in various National conferences to show case their projects and win accolades for their work.
- Student’s talents in sports and cultural are identified and encouraged.

- Faculty publish their research work in various reputed National and International journals.
- Students participate in conferences, seminars and are publishing their work in journals
- Department brings out an annual newsletter,- “CATALICA”, publishing the faculty and students’ achievements, activities of department, University Ranks bagged by students and articles by faculty and students.
- Department brings out souvenirs during Chemovation, national level symposium.
